What is a podcast?
- In the narrow sense, a podcast usually means an independent podcast following the production process described above. Distribution is decentralized, and all content is under your control. You therefore need your own hosting server, domain, and RSS subscription URL containing that domain. Even if the hosting server goes down, listeners can still find you through the fixed RSS link.
- A podcast is digital media: a series of audio, video, electronic radio, or text files published online as a list. Listeners subscribe through electronic devices to download or stream the files. “Podcast” blends “iPod” and “broadcast”.
- Simply put, a podcast is an audio program. It usually contains original audio or video recordings, but can also distribute recordings of TV or radio shows, talks, performances, or other events. It is entirely free content created around the world.
- In 2005, Apple CEO Steve Jobs said: “Podcasting is the next generation of radio. Users can now subscribe to over 3,000 free Podcasts and have each new episode automatically delivered over the Internet to their computers and iPods.” By 2020, the iTunes Store offered over a million podcast episodes, with over 750,000 independent podcasts worldwide. Distribution had expanded beyond computers and iPods to phones, smartwatches, smart speakers (Alexa, HomePod), CarPlay, and RSS subscriptions.
Polkacast : A decentralization podcast hosting platform
What is Polkacast?
- Polkacast integrates concepts including Substrate, IPFS, and Ethereum smart contracts to create BaaS, or Blockchain as a Service. It aims to give creators a convenient, fast, simple, profitable hosting platform, with extensive community autonomy and a TOKEN economy. Creators can earn secondary income beyond advertising through platform TOKENs and minting rights. Its BaaS is a community-governed, scalable, decentralized, smart-contract-based NATIVE WASM application, intended as a creation and distribution platform for independent podcasters and listeners.
Podcast growth channels
- Growing smart-speaker adoption supports audiobooks and podcasts. In 2020, penetration in urban areas of the US and China was expected to exceed 25% (36), with higher growth as other regions caught up. These devices are popular with audiobook and podcast audiences: 66% of US smart-speaker owners say they listen to at least one audiobook or podcast weekly.
- Wireless earphones: almost every young American has a pair, making mobile audio convenient. Global TWS sales reached 110 million units in 2019 and were expected to reach 140 million in 2020. The market was projected to reach RMB 118.2 billion by 2026, at a 10.6% CAGR.
- Connected cars: roughly 10% of podcast users listen in cars daily through CarPlay and Android Auto.

Polkacast vision
- Polkacast aims to become a Polkadot parachain, benefiting from the growing cross-chain ecosystem and shared security to offer safer, better community-governed services. It seeks a decentralized podcast platform that protects privacy and generates income.
- Podcasts let everyone express views and show themselves freely. Independence is their greatest appeal: individuals share their views and businesses their values. We believe each person or company can build an independent podcast and brand with a distinctive style; the community decides whether it succeeds.
Polkacast ecosystem
- A general-purpose DAPP podcast client.
- BaaS services based on Polkacast.
