After Stocks Move On-Chain: Who Will Rebuild Global Trading, Settlement, and Asset Management?

The next stage of equity tokenization concerns how assets are traded, settled, and used, rather than issuance counts. This article distinguishes real net inflows, round-the-clock trading demand, and three securities-rights structures, exploring opportunities and risks in on-chain portfolio management.

A Deep Look at On-Chain Equities in 2026 | Public Edition
Research as of October 22, 2026

Introduction: What Does Equity Tokenization Actually Change?

In 2026, tokenized equities are finally moving beyond the technical experiment of mapping Nasdaq prices onto an ERC-20. Three observable changes are emerging: real asset balances are growing, activity is extending beyond regular US trading hours, and more assets are being deployed in on-chain liquidity pools and collateral markets.

None of this means blockchains have replaced stock exchanges. Nor does a stock token on-chain automatically make its holder a shareholder in the listed company. The important change is a new layer of programmable assets and trading infrastructure: issuers, brokers, exchanges, and DeFi protocols can build different products around the same economic underlying.

RWA.xyz data retrieved on October 22, 2026 showed approximately $3.5 billion in tokenized-stock Distributed Value, including approximately $1.2 billion for bStocks, $906 million for Ondo, and $608 million for xStocks. The dashboard also showed approximately 4.38 million holder addresses and $10.49 billion in monthly transfer value. “Holders” here primarily means addresses, not 4.38 million unique people; transfers are not all genuine purchase-and-sale volume. 1

The significance is not that the market is already large. Compared with tens of trillions of dollars in listed equities, tokenized securities remain extremely early. More useful questions are why equities need to move on-chain, which frictions actually disappear, and which costs merely move to issuers, liquidity providers, and protocols.

Where Does Growth Come From: Real Capital, Prices, or Marketing?

Binance Research's October 20 report, bStocks By The Numbers, offers a representative sample. Launched in June 2026, bStocks reached $1 billion AUM in 125 days, faster than the 265 days for Ondo in the comparison. It contributed more than 60% of new tokenized-stock AUM over the period. More importantly, the report separates net inflows from asset-price effects, estimating that approximately 68% of AUM growth since launch came from net inflows, with the remainder from price changes and unattributed adjustments. 2

New AUM, however, is not necessarily newly created investment demand. Further issuance, redemption, and user-cohort data are needed to determine how much came from existing US-equity holders switching products, reallocations within crypto trading accounts, or new cross-border securities allocations. Net inflows support the existence of real demand, not yet its long-term stability.

Product diversification is more revealing: the top five bStocks assets' AUM share fell from approximately 97% to below 50%, while coverage approached 100 assets. Demand initially driven by star stocks and popular narratives is spreading into more equities and ETFs. High-profile technology and crypto-related stocks nevertheless remain important within the sample. 2

The market's first stage is whether assets exist. Its second is which assets users want to keep holding.

Round-the-Clock Trading: Time Flexibility Is Validated, Not Risk-Free Prices

Regular US stock-market hours cover only a small part of the week. Economic releases, policy news, and company events do not stop at the close. Tokenized equities and equity-linked perpetuals let users express expectations or transfer some risk while traditional markets are closed.

Binance Research shows approximately 56% of bStocks volume outside regular US hours: approximately 49 percentage points in weekday pre- and post-market sessions, versus only approximately 7 percentage points on weekends. Calling the full 56% “weekend stock-trading demand” is clearly wrong. 2

A July Binance study found that bStocks weekend price changes explained a substantial portion of subsequent Monday opening gaps over seven observed weekends. Direction matched in all 41 observations with gaps exceeding 3%. 3 This merits attention, but is not evidence that on-chain markets can always predict Wall Street. The period was short, the universe limited, and prices can reflect thin depth, inventory constraints, stale references, and trading frictions.

The real questions are who sets on-chain equity prices when securities markets close, what inventory-risk premium market makers quote when they cannot promptly hedge spot, and whether constrained arbitrage channels permit persistent deviations.

24/7 trading changes the timing of price discovery, but does not automatically deliver 24/7 depth, reliable fills, or immediate lossless redemption. On-chain operability is valuable for long-term portfolio holders, but high-frequency trading is not necessarily its optimal use.

Globalization: Stablecoins as the Account Layer for Securities Access

Another change lies in user geography. Binance Research found approximately 80% of early bStocks activity in June 2026 came from emerging-market users. By October, under revised geographic classifications and a volume-based measure, emerging and frontier markets together accounted for approximately 70%. Different dates, samples, and definitions mean this should not be interpreted as a 10-percentage-point decline in one metric. 24

The June report also found approximately 93% of bStocks trades were for less than one share, with a median value of approximately $18.81. 4 Small and fractional trades are not blockchain inventions. Combined with stablecoin balances, self-custody wallets, and cross-border platforms, however, they reduce the need for entirely separate funding experiences for each asset class.

Securities-access barriers have not vanished. Jurisdictional restrictions, issuance structures, stock-token conversion conditions, bank funding, and routes from stablecoins into traditional finance remain. What shrinks is some friction in account integration, cross-platform transfers, and minimum trade size.

Issuer technical specifications are therefore not the only competitive advantage. Distribution, existing users, stablecoin depth, quotes, and redemption convenience directly determine who attracts and retains users.

At least three fundamentally different structures are described as on-chain equities today.

The first is an issuer- and custody-backed tokenized securities receipt providing contractual economic rights. bStocks officially says its products are backed by underlying shares, convertible through specified channels subject to conditions, and use a Multiplier for splits and dividend reinvestment. 5 Share backing is not the same as direct registration as a listed-company shareholder. Actual rights depend on issuance documents, custody relationships, and enforceable conversion mechanisms.

The second extends existing securities infrastructure's bookkeeping on-chain. In December 2025, DTC received an SEC staff no-action letter for a pilot allowing eligible participants to transfer tokenized securities entitlements through registered wallets, while formal rights records remain anchored in existing infrastructure. Nasdaq received related rule approval in March 2026, aiming to preserve execution within the same order book while adding tokenized-entitlement delivery for some securities. 67

The third is a permissioned, native on-chain equity venue. On September 17, 2026, the SEC issued a temporary innovation exemption allowing qualifying Tokenized Securities Venues to trade tokenized securities with the same rights as traditional shares through controlled AMM pools, while retaining anti-fraud, eligibility, and issuer-objection rules. These rights requirements are not automatically the same as the first product type. 8

As of October 21, the SEC list included notices of intent from TSV LLC, OKXICE TSV, and Perpetuals.com. Being listed is not regulatory confirmation of operational readiness, much less evidence of actual trading. 9

Treating all three as interchangeable ERC-20s is both a legal mistake and potentially a smart-contract design error. The same ticker can represent different issuers, custodial assets, holder rights, conversion channels, and transfer restrictions.

The Second Wave of Value: From Buying Assets to Using Them

A stock token that merely reproduces price changes in a brokerage account can see its advantage eroded by fees, spreads, and custody risks. New market structure emerges when assets can enter portfolio, collateral, liquidity, recurring-investment, rebalancing, and distribution systems.

Binance Research's September report, The RWA Activation Era, proposes two useful measures: PAR, Programmable Asset Ratio, measures underlying-market assets entering programmable on-chain form; CAR, Capital Activation Rate, measures tokenized assets actually deployed in on-chain finance. Under its methodology, equity CAR rose from 1.95% to 7.54% during 2026 through September 15, with usage concentrated in liquidity pools and lending. 10

The insight is that issuance does not equal economic depth. A billion-dollar system where assets can only be held, not transferred, may matter less to DeFi than a smaller system supporting effective collateralization, trading, and portfolio management.

Higher CAR is not always better. Repeated staking, lending, or recursive collateralization of the same asset for incentives can raise apparent capital utilization while increasing linked liquidation and liquidity risks. Quality growth means additional economic services, reasonable fees, and robust risk-adjusted returns, not just more on-chain TVL.

Competition Is Moving from Issuance to Issuance, Distribution, and Financial Applications

Participants should be separated by value-chain role: issuers and custodians create rights and supply; venues provide prices and execution; stablecoins and settlement networks move funds; applications and protocols organize assets into understandable products people keep using.

Binance Research's September report found that rising bStocks and Robinhood volume shares were closely associated with existing distribution networks. Among early bStocks users, 58.5% also traded perpetuals or stocks directly. Tokenization can convert existing behaviors rather than educating everyone from scratch. 11

This suggests the next competitive position: the portfolio layer. Investors will not remain satisfied with buying tokens individually. Thematic funds, risk-budget portfolios, scheduled rebalancing, index shares, automated portfolio investing, and machine-executed strategies can turn individual trading assets into programmable asset-management products.

Tradable portfolio shares nevertheless depend on safe smart-contract custody of underlying assets, fair subscriptions and redemptions, reliable quotes, and accounting conservation during market closures, issuer restrictions, and corporate actions. A batch-buy button is not an ETF, and naming an on-chain share does not automatically confer regulated ETF status.

What Determines the Next Three Years Is Not Token Counts

I prefer five variables that data can falsify.

First, net issuance and redemption: excluding price appreciation, do investors keep increasing actual allocations?

Second, real depth: what is executable slippage for typical $10,000, $100,000, and $1 million orders, including outside market hours?

Third, cross-market spreads: can arbitrage channels close deviations between token prices and the NAV of legally redeemable assets?

Fourth, capital uses: which lending, collateral, index, and actual portfolio services sustain demand after risk costs?

Fifth, issuer and account interoperability: can tokens across chains, custodial systems, and legal entitlements be described consistently rather than wrongly conflated?

These variables determine whether on-chain equities mainly become another way to hold a brokerage account, a volatile 24-hour trading product, or genuinely independent securities infrastructure with financial value.

Conclusion: More Than Keeping Wall Street Open Forever

“Never closing” is the easiest story to spread, but not necessarily the most valuable economic outcome. For retail investors, on-chain equities may reduce account friction in global allocation; for traders, they provide new windows and spreads; for institutions, different settlement and distribution designs; for DeFi developers, richer programmable collateral and portfolio inputs.

After equities move on-chain, the competitive unit may no longer be a single stock, broker, or blockchain, but a financial-product system connecting asset authenticity, liquidity, portfolio management, pricing, and risk control end to end.

The next stage is not proving that more stocks can move on-chain, but how much capital has a reason to stay there.
